If only the Ferguson folks would have waited a couple more weeks. Eric Garner was choked to death by officer Daniel Pantaleo on July 17, 2014. Pantaleo used a prohibited chokehold to subdue an angry but nonviolent Garner, and ultimately took his life. The video evidence (seen below) proves this narrative; and at the very least offers probable cause for an indictment. The Staten Island grand jury somehow did not find that video convincing, and no charges will be brought against Pantaleo unless the federal government gets involved. This a true tragedy of justice.
If you are going to participate in protests in honor of a martyr, let that person be Eric Garner. Not Michael Brown. Eric Garner was surrounded by officers, and was standing relatively calmly up until the point that he was brutalized. Michael Brown? He was assaulting people all morning, including officer Darren Wilson, giving Wilson sufficient reason to fear for his safety. Whether or not you believe Wilson should have been indicted, there was never any proof beyond a reasonable doubt that he would be convicted in a trial. I believe Pantaleo could have been successfully prosecuted. If not for murder, then certainly a lesser charge.
If anyone peacefully protests after this verdict, I will not blame them. Be careful though, and learn from Ferguson; the only people that get hurt in a riot are the people that have to continue living in that community after the spotlights fade. If you want to make lasting changes you should join the force and do your part in erasing this perceived racial divide. Be the change that you want to see in this world.
